Does Prescribing Expired Medication Constitute A Medical Mistake?
Information
Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms. XXXX,
I don't know what the laws are in your state, but this is definitely inappropriate medical practice.
Expiration dates are just that - the date after which a medication may expire and should no longer be used. Some medications, such as Tylenol, can be dangerous after their expiration date. Most just lose their efficacy as may happened with the dexamethasone your husband received.
As some medications have a shelf life of 1 year, I think this physician may have been confused in thinking it has a 1 year shelf life AFTER expiration. This is incorrect. Or, maybe the service he worked for is trying to save money by using old medications. Either way, it is wrong.
I suggest contacting the Florida Medical Board and filing a complaint. Here is a link to their website to file a complaint. If this link doesn't show up in blue, copy and paste it into your address bar.
