Posted on Wed, 5 Jun 2024
Question: Hi I am a 47 year old female. For the past year, predominately over the summer I have been experiencing swollen feet and ankles usually during the second half the day. Worse when working (teacher). I am currently taking a 100 mg daily of a beta blocker for hypertension. The swelling developed around the same time that I was found to have a hormonal imbalance. My body id not producing enough progesterone probably due to age. What could cause the swelling.

Brief Answer:
I recommend performing some tests:

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Your symptoms are suggestive of chronic venous insufficiency, considering the fact that prolonged standing up position triggers the swelling.

Anyway, other possible causes to consider would be: renal or hepatic dysfunction or possible right heart failure.

For this reason I recommend consulting with your attending physician and performing some tests:

- complete blood count
- kidney and liver function tests
- blood albumine and protein plasma levels
- blood electrolytes
- a cardiac ultrasound
- a Doppler ultrasound of the leg vessels.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

I remain at your disposal in case of further questions whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Do or can hormoes play a role in chronic venous insufficiency? I've had a full blood workup around 6 months after swelling began and all was ok. I have an appointment at the end of Aigust with a cardiologist (to check blood pressure) would it be ok to wait for a heart ultrasoud until then. I had an ecg and all was ok.

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Hormones do not play any important role in chronic venous insufficiency. Prolonged standing up position is a more important cause triggering leg swelling in such case.

Anyway, as long as you don’t have other symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue, it can wait until consulting with a cardiologist for a cardiac ultrasound.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

I would be glad to assist you again whenever you need!
