Does Residual Problem From Rheumatic Fever In Childhood Occur In Older Years?

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Jul 2014
Question: I am a 72 year old man, very active. I had rheumatic fever at the age of 5. I have had knee problems for a couple of years, however, my lower legs seem achy and not as strong as I like. I do not think it has to do with knee problems. My heart is fine as I have been an avid bicycler and have had no symptoms. I am wondering if there is a residual problem from rheumatic fever that occurs in older years. During the time of the fever, I lost all strength in my legs and my father had to carry me around. Thankyou, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No residual problem of rheumatic fever.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I would like to answer your query.
Rheumatic fever usually affects the joints and you seem to be having only joint problems. The joint problems at your age is usually due to osteoarthritis and you are taking treatment for it.
We have a jagron in medicine "Rheumatic fever licks the joints, but affects the heart" - we mean joint symptom is very limited but heart is more.
As there are not cardiac symptoms, Rheumatic fever is not affecting you now in any way.
The lower leg ache and mild weakness (muscle pain and weakness) could be due to due to nutritional deficiency. You can take nutritional supplements containing multi-vitamins and minerals. It should improve your symptoms within 15 days.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
