Does Risk Is Higher In Factor V Leiden Carriers?
I remember you asa great intelligent doctor !
I have question deep vein thrombosis -
1. qestion
As there have been article study and in is said that lifetime risk for VT is about 8 %
and risk is higher in Factor V Leiden carriers
Supplemental Figure 1, Panel A - in this study shows the diagram - and lifetime risk is very good example
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC0000/#SD1
And this risk could as understand life treating - and also self limiting !
Is it so ?
from article:
(Definite deep vein thrombosis was defined as a positive venogram, duplex ultrasound
Probable deep vein thrombosis was defined as a positive Doppler examination or impedance plethysmography)
And another study compare two groups with V Leiden an non
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1538-7836.2004.01117.x
2. question
I have read that thous who is V Leiden positive - and who parents developed DVT at younger age (also V Leiden positive)
are as high as 50 % of risk in DVT at early age !
Is it so ?
And should they be treated at early age with anticoagulant - so reduce risk of DVT ?
And Should V Leiden positive use anticoagulant as prophylactic before firs DVT event !
Thank you very much
the hemophylic pattern is needed
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome in Ask the doctor again
Thank you for your opinion
Regarding the first question the deficiency of Leiden V factor if it is homozygote in type it means that the risk is high for developing DVT and the patient should take anticoagulants for the entire life. If it heterozygote than the risk is lower and probably self limited.
Secondly first in children that have their parents already diagnosed with Leiden factor problems than the first step in diagnosing is to do a hemophilic panel blood tests examinations. This test is specific for the disturbances of the coagulation factors .You can discuss with your doctor and if you do it and have the results you can send them to me and we will discuss again.
Hope to have been helpful
