Does Running Cause Injury To Knees Or Bones?
Hi I do Running as a part of my exercise routine. On an average i run 4-5 KM 5 days a week. i am doing running since last 8-9 months and that did helped me reduce my weight and gain fitness. however since last week i am having slight pain when i run on my right leg knee.
i want to know does running causes any injuries to Knees or bones because i have pain only on right leg and one of my friend who is an athlete said running never causes any injury, had that been the case all runner would have been walking with sticks by now.
please confirm does running daily invites any leg injuries
Running is not likely to harm you.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Running as such helps in building the muscle mass and keeps the tone of your muscles good. At your age, the pain in the knee is more likely to be due to stress related minor capsular inflammation. A decrease in the joint lubricants is another possible cause.
This mostly subsides by taking antiinflammatory agents and mild pain killers like ibuprofen. In some cases for acute problem muscle relaxants like thiocolchicoside are needed after consulting with your orthopaedician.
Taking oral lubricating agent suppleents like glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin are also helpful.
Right now, for symptomatic relief:
1. Give enough rest to your knee- use an elastic knee brace.
2. Take mild pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
3. Stronger prescription NSAIDS with muscle relaxants may help if simple analgesics do not help.
4. Hot compresses to your knee will be useful pain relieving measure. You may apply a local analgesic gel on that area.
5. calf and hamstring stretches can be helpful under the guidance of a physiotherapist after the acute pain subsides completely.
6. Generally we recommended, rest, graded exercises, rest and graded exercises to let you know the right amount of time you can spend on exercise without injuring yourself.
I hope this answers your query.
