Question: After my sclera buckle was removed in 2012, I immediately experienced dizziness, which has persisted until now, with no relief. Head movement exacerbates the sensation. A small (3 cm) piece of the buckle came lose during the operation and passed through the sclera and lodged under the retina. Its location was stabilized with laser treatment. This plastic tube has raised the retina somewhat, and is clearly visible to doctors during examination. Could this be the cause of my dizziness? It's removal, I am told, would be very difficult.
Brief Answer:
Scleral buckle is not responsible for dizziness.

Hello it seems from the history that you have underwent removal of the scleral buckle in the year 2012, following which you are having dizziness. A small piece of scleral buckle has extruded and lodged under the retina and it is told that the removal of the buckle is difficult.
Scleral buckle is a surgical procedure done for retinal detachment with good surgical results.
Scleral buckle or its removal is not known to cause dizziness. Since you have mentioned that the dizziness is increased by head movement, the likely cause for your dizziness can be problems in the neck like cervical portion of the spinal cord.
Hence you require evaluation by a physician to look for cause for dizziness and treatment accordingly.
The complications of the scleral buckle like extrusion is seen rarely in about 1% of cases. Though the best treatment is to remove the buckle but in few cases the buckle may be left with follow up. If the buckle causes raise of retina as in your case, the treatment is by laser or cryo therapy. Since you have undergone laser treatment and it is stabilized, there is no need to worry.
Hence to conclude scleral buckle removal or extrusion is not responsible for dizziness and since you have undergone laser treatment for stabilization of the buckle there is no need to worry.
Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
