Does Smoking Increase The Risk Of Bladder Cancer And Cause Blood In Urine?
Question: Hi Doctor:
Background: 48 year old male non smoker of tobacco products.
I have three questions: I just went for my general checkup and they found Microscopic blood in my urine. My Doctor said there was very little blood and I am scheduled for a re-test. I do not know the specifics in regards to parts and exact amount but he said it was very small and not to worry and that to just come back and check it again. I have not done a urine test in a little while and for whatever reason did not follow protocol: I did not wipe genital area and did not provide a mid stream catch. I read so much about it now and understand the proper procedures for next time but I just urinated directly into the test container and provided that. No mid stream catch was provided. My first question is how possible is it that since I did not follow protocol that there is a false positive on the microscopic blood?
My next question is that I do smoke pot and was wondering if that increases my risk for bladder cancer and could that be related to the microscopic blood? I have no other symptoms.
My third question is if it comes back negative do you recommend a CT scan or additional tests including a third urine analysis?
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
There is very least probability that your test results are false positive d
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
There is very least probability that your test results are false positive due to the reasons you have mentioned. However, repeat test is very much important.
We can decide further plan based on those results. If repeat test is negative, we can go for one more similar test. Smoking pot can lead to many ill-effects, one of which can indirectly cause blood in urine but rare and cannot exclude.
Hope it helps
