Does Smoking Nicotine Gum Increase Uric Acid Level?

Question: Does smoking or nicotine gum increase uric acid level.?
Brief Answer:
Smoking reduces uric acid levels
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
Research shows that smoking decreases serum uric acid levels.
Research published shows that
"After excluding the other factors affecting the uric acid levels, the significant low plasma uric acid in smokers was attributed to a reduction of the endogenous production as a result of the chronic exposure to cigarette smoke that is a significant source of oxidative stress."
The same cannot be said about nicotine gum. Rarely has increased uric acid levels been noted in people chewing nicotine gum but further research is needed.
Hope your query is answered.
