Does Stool Color And Shape Say Something About One's Health?
There is a wide range for what is normal.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
I can understand your wanting to ask this question as this isn't something that is taught in health classes usually, or discussed much.
There really is a wide range of what is normal. The average XXXXXXX has a BM once a day while people in Asia may go more often due to a higher fiber diet. For Americans, anything in the range of three times a day to three times a week is normal as long as the BM is not so hard that it requires straining, nor liquid/loose like diarrhea.
The normal color is brown, due to a pigment that is excreted into the stool. Shape may vary, but "normal" is formed stool. It is ok if it floats but as long as it doesn't look like there is an oil slick on the toilet water it is ok.
Abnormal colors have various meanings:
Green usually means you have either had a lot of leafy greens like XXXXXXX or ingested green food coloring. But it can look green from rapid transit thru the colon too.
Clay or white colored stools can mean an obstruction of the gall bladder or duct such as from a gall bladder stone. This interferes with the pigment I mentioned above, getting into the stool to color it brown.
Black tarry stool is concerning because it means there is bleeding in the stomach or above the stomach (esophagus) and the stomach acid has acted on the blood giving it this appearance.
Bright red blood, if just on the toilet paper when you wipe, or on the outside of the stool, usually means there is a problem in the anus or rectum, such as hemorrhoids or anal fissure/tear.
Bright red blood mixed in with the stool or in the toilet water means there is a more significant cause of bleeding anywhere in the digestive tract: if brisk, it can even be from the stomach as the stomach acid may not have had a chance to turn it black. Or it can be from a growth in the large intestines.
I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification. By the way, I see that you requested Dr. Rynne, but as far as I can tell, he has not answered questions on this site for many years although his picture remains. I don't think any of the doctors pictured on the webpage actively are online on this site anymore.
If you would like to ask me a question in the future (after you have closed this discussion), feel free to write my name at the beginning of your question and I will try to respond.
