Does The Age Of The Ultrasound Equipment Matter To Get Accurate Results?
Question: Hi,
A bit of a strange question - I just had a yearly Urology check-up today and all is okay. I actually have a bit of a strange question about the equipment in the Dr's office. The Dr gave me a physical exam and also an ultrasound of my testicles and everything was fine. However, the Ultrasound machine in the office was very old (a little screen in the actual machine and printed out the scan photos rather than digital), the tech said it was the oldest she's used but it does the job. My question is does the age of the machine matter in terms of getting accurate results?
The Dr was great and I'd like to go back, but the machine looked ancient compared to other new machines I've seen. What is the difference between an old one like that and newer ones? Do they all do the same job?

Brief Answer:
Age of the machines will not alter the results.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
I can understand your concern.
Age of the machines will not alter the results.
Basic principle of ultrasound is same in all the machines and it will not alter the findings.
Findings that we are concerned during ultrasound of scrotum are size of testis and epididymis, echo texture, fluid collection, vascularity etc and these can be assessed accurately by all the machines.
So,please don't worry about age of the machines.

Hope I have answered your query.

Thank you very much for your response. I guessed that is the case, was just surprised to see a machine so old.
The imaging process seemed quick pretty straight forward (not a whole lot to look at I guess compared to other areas of the body) so I guess quite easy to spot things if they show up?
What advantage do the very modern machines have these days?
He seemed a really nice Dr and would like to go back, maybe he'll have a newer one next year :-)

Brief Answer:
Modern machines are generally smaller, less heat producing, better resolution
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Modern advance machines are generally smaller, less heat producing, better resolution, greater penetration,3D and 4D imaging etc.
These facilities differ with different models.
Ultrasound of scrotum is possible by any good machine and it generally doesn't require very advance techniques like 3D,4D etc.
