Does The Rabies Virus Survive Outside The Host?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Nov 2023
Question: It's been 3 months since I may have stepped on the remains of a racoon and got it in my truck (don't know because it was 0430 in the morning)

I am worried about rabbies still some surviving if I tracked rome brain tissue in, the temps have mostly been 40 in the day and belwo freezing at night, with some warmer days. I have had it professionally cleaned and I have sprayed it with quattery ammonia and a later a bleach solution (not at the same time). Just worried that I could have missed something

Is it safe to put my kids in the truck, I am assuming even in the low temps the virus would be dead by now.

Brief Answer:

There is no risk of rabies transmission

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Rabies virus gets killed once the tissues get dried on exposure to the atmosphere outside the host. The virus does not survive for long outside the host. There is absolutely no risk of Rabies transmission here.

Yes, your children can safely use the truck. Please do not worry.
