Does The Use Of Melatonin Have An Effect On Blood Glucose And Cholesterol Levels?
Question: I have used sleep aids for many years, especially Lunesta, and earlier this year, Ambien. I was told by one of the doctors on this site that these hypnotic meds can cause cancer. I stopped using these drugs. Instead, I have been taking Melatonin. I started with 5mg and now I take 10mg. It does help me sleep. Now I read that Melatonin can increase sugar and cholesterol levels. My last glucose was 104 and my cholesterol was a little high. Please advise.
Brief Answer:
No major concern about increasing sugars or cholsterol
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. Melatonin is good to regulate your sleep cycle. But not recommended to use it for more than 3 weeks at a stretch. It can cause confusion , nausea, headache etc, but there are no major concerns about high sugars or cholsterol levels with this medicine.
