Question: Does this CT show changes consistent with dementia and if so can you tell from these results the degree? My dad had his sodium drop to 125 due to a blood pressure medication with a diuretic in it when this CT was done.

Brief Answer:
It may be dementia if clinically suspected, low sodium should be corrected.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to the "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query, I saw the CT scan report too.

These CT scan findings may support a type of dementia known as vascular dementia.

However, CT scan findings are not specific when it comes to the diagnosis of dementia, neither for the degree.

Low sodium levels may cause dementia-like symptoms, seizures, etc.

Before to say if there is dementia ( and this is evaluated mainly clinically and by neuropsychological tests ), sodium levels should be corrected.

If there are symptoms of dementia that persist after the correction of the sodium levels, vascular dementia is suspected.

Discuss with your father's Neurologist these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

okay thank you for that information. How long would it take for Tenoric 100/25 mg to get out of his system fully and how long to restore his sodium back to normal? it was 133 at discharge from the hospital on Monday afternoon. His blood pressure has been running low averaging 95-100/high 50s without any medication at all.

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

The effects of Tenoric on sodium levels should be diminished in a day or two after stopping it.

The levels of sodium should be corrected slowly mainly by food intake, in order to prevent brain damage.

If blood pressure is still high it should be corrected with drugs that don't affect the levels of sodium.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.
