Question: I’ve been having a reoccurring pain in my wrist. It started just in one joint and now the pain has spread throughout my hand. It’s been going on for a couple of years and continues to get worse. When it rains it also tends to hurt more. It hurts to put pressure on it or use it at all at this point. It hurts to cross my fingers. My wrist also makes a clicking noise because of it. Does this sound like anything? On an X-RAY it shows nothing wrong.

Brief Answer:
Please see the detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for the query. I can understand your concern. Pain in the wrist which is radiating in nature may result from sprains, fractures, repetitive stress, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome etc.

Usually, wrist induced clicking noise may be caused by formation of gas between joints. Such type of noise can also be caused by tendons, ligaments or muscles due to rubbing over bone.

As your X-ray was normal, so you can undergo CT scan or MRI to detect the underlying causes for your wrist joint and then treat them accordingly. Because, your wrist pain may result from any type of injury or damage to the tendons, ligaments, muscles or nerves of that particular area.

Wearing a wrist brace, applying hot or cold compresses for 20 minutes, taking painkillers like ibuprofen, naproxen or aceclofenac etc may help to reduce your present sufferings. In case of carpal tunnel symdrome due to median nerve entrapment, surgical intervention may be needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your questions. Let me know if I can assist you further.
