Question: Even though there is no known causation for sarcoidosis!
Is it possible for the burning oil drums and oil fields during the first phase of Desert Storm war in the early 1990s to have caused an environment and air pollution to cause a person to become ill with sarcoidosis to occur?
Is it possible for a person to be diagnosed with asthma and told that they still have an underlying disease that is still interfering with their lung capacity?
Could that underlying disease be sarcoidosis and be dormant for 5 years?
Is it possible to develop sarcoidosis from 3 - 6 yearly exposures to riot control agents in an enclosed environment?

Brief Answer:
Oil and dust can trigger both sarcoidosis and asthma.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

Even though the cause of sarcoidosis is unknown it comes as a result of the body immune system responding to an unknown substance. These substances can be chemicals found in oil burning drums and oil fields and dust too.

Sometimes sarcoidosis develops gradually during the years. Of course, there is a possibility that a person has sarcoidosis and asthma too.

This coexistence is also related to the immune response of a person since both asthma and sarcoidosis have genetic, autoimmune origin triggered by environmental factors such as dust or other substances

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you!

My military job I did training with riot control agents to teach people how to react in a chemical related combat environment. Can repeat exposure to riot control agent a few times a year trigger sarcoidosis?

Brief Answer:
Occasional exposure doesn't cause it.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
I don't think a casual exposure few times a year can cause irritation to contribute to sarcoidosis.
I think a continuous exposure (every day) for many years ( at least 7-10) years can trigger it.
Also in this training I think you used fake chemical agents which do not really cause problems.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Best regards

I served in the military for 15 and a half years. I trained soldiers a minimum of 3 - 6 times a year; starting Oct 1986 - about XXXXXXX 1998. In the training, I used real riot control agents,(CS and CN powder and capsules) to simulate a chemical attack, in a closed in environment time inside ranged about 30 minutes maximum. I used the same stuff US and other police agencies around the world would use to break up crows.
The way I was taught to use the CS and CN powder and
capsules was to break open some of the capsules and sprinkle it and the regular powder on the floor, as well as burn it to creat thick smoke inside of a small building or tent. The tent or building was sealed shut and big enough to hold about 20 - 30 soldiers inside with me. I taught them to react and put on their mask and wear their gear properly.

I was diagnosed with asthma in the early 1990s. Later in late 1998 during my physical, the doctor stated that my exercise induced asthma was under control. However, I still had an underlying illness that was interfering with my lung capacity and breathing when I did pft's. There no farther workup done. Later in 1999, I was told basically the same thing. Again the doctor did no farther testing and just sent me on my. Is it possible that that underline illness could have been sarcoidosis? In December 2002, my private doctor first thought and told me that he believes I had Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Until he took and tested my lung biopsy in February 2003. Than I was diagnosed at that with what appeared to be full-blown sarcoidosis and put on the second highest dosage of prednisone you could take until I was weaned off over months.

Is highly possible that the underlying illness in 1998 and 1998 was and is my current illness of sarcoidosis?

Hello again dear and thank you for asking again.
I read all your past medical history.

I think your work on military has contributed to your illness. Also, I think that the underlying illness your doctor was referring to is of course sarcoidosis.

Since having asthma and sarcoidosis! I have been oxygen dependent since 2009. I carry a 2 liter oxygen tank with me everywhere I go and back up tanks in my truck. I pray that I don't run out of oxygen before I'm able to switch out tanks. Over the years, I've developed gastro esophageal reflux disorder, sleep apnea, hypoxia, chronic fatigue and pulmonary hypertension, as well as bilateral pulmonary embolisms and have been on blood thinners ever since. I am very XXXXXXX that there will be no additional complications or illnesses in my life hopefully these illnesses will not get any worse and caused my demise eventually.

Is it possible that the bilateral pulmonary embolisms, sleep apnea, pulmonary hypertension, GERD, chronic fatigue, hypoxia and a number of other issues maybe related are caused by the asthma and sarcoidosis?

I have been doing my own research, reading brochures and pamphlets on sleep apnea, GERD as well as my other illnesses trying to figure things out and get a much better understanding of my illnesses. Some say GERD and could cause or aggravate each other making it worse. Some claim asthma and sarcoidosis causes sleep apnea and or make it worse.
