Feeling Something Catching In My Throat When I Swallow

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Aug 2024
Question: I turned my head sharply to the right to look behind me (about an hour ago). Now there is something catching in my throat when I swallow. If I don't move, it's fine. Try to swallow and it feels like someone is pushing against the left side of my esophagu with a finger. It's a sharp-ish, deeper pain: root of the tongue, back of the throat, but also shallow on the neck beside the esophagus. It feels like a muscle (or the like) associated with swallowing is pinching or caught. Breathing is unaffected. I can shift my Adam's apple to the right without consequence, but moving it left results in the same pain.

Brief Answer:
It may be due to swollen tonsils.....

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

I have gone through your query and here is my advice.

Please let me know do you have any other symptoms like cough, cold, sore throat, fever.?

As you are having pain while swallowing it may be due to swollen tonsils. I Don't think that it is due to muscle pulling or sprain.

Meanwhile I would suggest you to do the following to ease yourself.
1) Do XXXXXXX warm water gargling or betadine soln gargling.
2) take steam inhalation.
3) you can take Tab Acetaminophen to ease pain.
4) Take warm fluids..
5) keep your self well hydrated.
6 )Take proper rest.

Hope I have answered your query, let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care.

Regards,
Dr Shyam XXXXXXX

Thank you for responding. There are no other symptoms, and the onset was abrupt. Very abrupt. I cannot see that my tonsils are swollen. Also, is it possible I have somehow pinched a nerve? The discomfort is constant, and while it's not actually my throat that hurts, the muscles and possibly the lymph nodes in the area are extremely tender

As per your history the pain may be due to infection in your lymph nodes.

Kindly follow the measures advised previously..
For pain you can take Tab Ibuprofen 400 mg.

If still the pain doesn't resolve then you may need antibiotics and further evaluation..for that Kindly consult with your ENT doctor.
