Question: For Dr. Spaho. Hi, doctor. Hope u are well. Past several weeks, have unrelenting burning in one spot in back of throat (on the right side, of course), pain radiates into rt. ear, down neck and feels like a lump in throat. Before reaching out to u, have been checked by an ENT who at first thought this was some sort of reflux but after many antacid meds and no change, he suggested it may be neurological. I also was seen by an oral surgeon; found nothing amiss, also noted neurological component. Knowing my history of AO coupled with the loss of taste/smell over 3 months ago, do the symptoms described above sound like any kind of a neurological issue going on? And if so, any remedies u could suggest. I am taking Neurontin and amitrip. but in low doses. Thanks, doctor. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
It may be of peripheral nerve origin. Read below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for asking me directly.

I have read your new question.

Given the history of taste and smell problems and AO, that burning spot in your throat may be of peripheral nerve irritation origin.

The acidity from gastroesophageal reflux may irritate the nerves too.

This is reinforced by the fact that there was no other cause found after the examinations by the Doctors that you mentioned.

Since you are using low doses of Neurontin and amitriptyline, I think that increasing the dose of Neurontin may result in the improvement of your new symptoms.

Since the neurological origin is suggested, I think that you should discuss with your Neurologist also for your issues.

Hope I helped you.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

Best regards.
