For A Few Days I Was Feeling Aches And Pains

Posted on Fri, 7 Dec 2018
Question: For a few days I was feeling aches and pains and was very tired (Sunday & Monday), so I slept quite a bit. I thought that I had a touch of the flu. Last evening about 11 PM I broke out in a serious sweat (I had been sleeping and it woke me up). A few hours later, it happened again. I fell back to sleep and everything since has been good. I no longer have the aches and pains or tiredness. I feel really good. I am in good health, not over weight, eat healthy, exercise 5 days a week, no family history of heart issues, cholesterol well in line, and get annual physical exams. My wife thinks I may have had a heart attack. Your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
it's uncertain

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

body aches, tiredness and sweating are usually caused by infections, therefore the flu is potential cause of your symptoms. Something that doesn't quite fit here is that sweating woke you up and it happened again a few hours later. It's not that an infection cannot present this way but it'd be a rather unusual way to do so.

A heart attack or other equally serious disorders may also present with sweating that wakes the patient up. Doctors usually fear of symptoms that wake a patient up. Mild disorders do not usually disturb a patient's sleep.

Since everything happened a few hours ago, measuring the serum troponin levels and d-dimers should suffice to exclude serious disorders like an acute myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism. A complete blood count and C-RP levels may help to diagnose an infection - but not always.

Heart attacks are far more common in patients who have many risk factors. Your age is a risk factor. Arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, a sedentary lifestyle, bad lipid profile, family history of heart attacks particularly at an early age and smoking are other conditions that may predispose to heart attacks.

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Kind Regards!
