For About A Week, My Nasal Passages Have Been Drier

default
Posted on Wed, 20 May 2020
Question: For about a week, my nasal passages have been drier than usual and they appear to have some blood when I use my nasal spray. For many decades, I have had severe bad allergies and taken a Loratadine every morning and a Benadryl every night. A few years ago, I started using 2 sprays in each nostril every morning of Fluticasone Propionate. It helped so much that I stopped my allergy shots. I still sneeze a bit more than most people but feel my allergies are under very good control. I'm wondering if I'm taking too much medicine and it's drying my nasal passages too much. Or is there another problem? The dryness seems to be getting a little better but the blood is still there. Historically (at least before Fluticasone Propionate) spring was my worst allergy time. Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
Common but can be managed easily:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This dryness with minimal blood stained nasal mucus is common during weather changes, in hot, dry weather, excessive use of nasal sprays, mild nasal infections and so on.

2. Saline nasal drops will help.

3. Ideally you should take newer anti-histamines as they also tend to dry the nasal mucosa. fluticasone furoate once daily is now preferred over fluticasone propionate twice daily.

4. Ideally you should get allergy tests done and then allergy avoidance will help reduce dependence on medication, reducing these troublesome side effects.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
