For Genetic Peripheral Neuropathy How Much B12 Should I Take

Posted on Sat, 6 Apr 2019
Question: For genetic peripheral neuropathy how much B12 should I take each day? I am about 85 kg.
I think it is only sensory loss but I am wondering if I notice some muscle loss in my shin - when I pull my foot up I get an indent of next to my shin bone on the outside which starts about 10 cm above my ankle and is about 10 cm long above that.
Are there other vit I should take - the neuropathy has travelled from my foot up my shin - I don't have any pain. I would like to do something to stop or reverse this. thanks

Brief Answer:
Regarding vitamin supplements

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The supplemental recommended dose of Vitamin 12 (Methylcobalamin) in a neuropathic condition is 750mcg - 1500 mcg per day. You can also take a B Complex vitamin in addition to vitamin B 12.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.

Hi Do I need to worry about taking too much B12. I am taking 1000 mcg of B12 - how much could I also take in a B complex pill. My brother takes 5000 mcg for his neuropathy - is that a concern?

What do you think about my worry about muscle loss?

thanks again

Brief Answer:
Regarding Neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

A B -complex contains a daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of each of the B vitamins. RDA for Vitamin B12 is just 1-25 mcg whereas the supplemental doses of Vitamin B12 in case of Neuropathy is 750-1500mcg/ day which is good enough. Since B vitamins are water soluble, any excess are anyways going to be washed out of the body. So, its a waste. As far as your concern related to muscle loss is concerned, I would suggest that you have a muscle power grading assessment which would determine whether you have motor weakness or not. This would be done by a GP or a physiotherapist. I would also suggest a blood test for Muscle enzymes.

Take care
