Question: My domestic partner has taken Namenda for a about 3 years. His dosage is now Namenda XR 28mg. He cannot take anything with Aricept in the formula because it does something to his heart that makes his blood pressure go down to 50 over 70. Is there a time limit on how long he can take Namenda. He has had no adverse reactions to the medication.

Brief Answer:
There are no such time limits

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Memantine (Namenda) can be used as long as it is effective. In my personal experience with individuals with alzheimer's disease I have continued the medication for upto seven years and no such severe blood pressure fall observed.

I understand that it is involved with orthostatic hypo tension (decrease n blood pressure on changing posture) but that can be manged with increased intake of salts, support stockings and fludrocortisone.

In my opinion try increasing fluid intake and use support stockings if the problem continues.

I hope this helps you.

Thank again.
