Question: I have been on oxygen because of my emphysema for 2 years. Now I've read that's concidered end stage, stage 4. Is this true? And that I may not live much longer? Please let me know about the stage. I do not have a pulmonologist. Long story.

I lost a lot of weight and have more trouble breathing. I can't do much anymore. I can't hardly take a shower by myself. This is con't of above question.

Brief Answer:
You need oxygen but with that you can stay well.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Welcome to Health Care Magic.
My name is Dr Muhammad Ahmad & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way.

MY OPINION:
I have read you question history and I will like to discuss a few things with you.

1- YOUR LUNGS:
You are on oxygen it means that your lungs are damaged enough that they can't catch enough oxygen from air around, but you are not on a ventilator or a BI-pap it clearly means that your lungs are in a better enough shape that you can live a normal life if oxygen is good enough around you.

2- ANXIETY:
Your biggest problem which i have understood from your previous post history is anxiety , you read too many things on internet, it is indeed a good habit but some times it misleads one, specially if one doesn't have much medical knowledge. Only a doctor can clinically correlate tests and scans to interpret condition, stage and management if some one. If your doctor has put you on just oxygen and meds and haven't asked you to stay admitted in a hospital on a bi-pap or a ventilator, it means that you are good to go with just oxygen and meds.

In my opinion your anxiety is affecting you know , every one has fear of dying but if it gets onto your nerves and you keep thinking about it, it makes your life hard. You have been having panic attacks lately what happen in a panic attack ? you start breathing rapidly, heart beat goes up, you body releases stress hormone like adrenaline and starts using more energy and your lungs with scares supply of oxygen can't coup up with this increased energy rush in your body this only makes you condition worse.

I will ask you to sit back and relax this is NOT the last stage peopl live decades on oxygen last stage is usually on a bi-pap in a hospital or on a ventilator in an ICU, this is just second stage of COPD in first stage one needs just meds and in second stage you have to use oxygen as well. In third stage you need BI-PAP and in 4th you need ventilator. Please stop reading different material which are some times put up on internet by people who are not even doctor and even if they know what they are saying , you don't know what to take out of it. So try to pull yourself out of your anxiety and don't read much by yourself ,and if you have concerns talk to your doctor.

WHAT NEXT:
I won't say that you can go back to normal but one thing i can tell you is, you can stop it here , you can live decades at oxygen, just save your lungs and don't let them deteriorate further. Take regular meds and stay calm it will really help you lead a near normal life ,if not normal.

...

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
