Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
By what you explain, very likely the redness and the swelling is due to a possible local infection which can be due to the hair follicle (the root of an eyelash being infected, also called "stye").
Most of the time, this is not serious and should settle in a few days. To help with it generally local warm packs are recommended 10-15 minutes several times a day, and also some local antibiotic ointment (eye ointment)- you should avoid using in that area creams or ointments that are not recommended to be used in the eye.
Also, avoid the use of makeup or other ingredients that may cause local irritation.
Normally you should start to feel better in 3-4 days.
If you notice no improvement in the symptoms or you notice any worsening or problems with the vision, or especially if you get pain when you move the eye, then you will need to see a doctor to rule out cellulitis. This is a deeper infection and needs urgent treatment with high dose oral or intravenous antibiotics.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposition in case further medical assistance is needed.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General and Family Physician
