Hi and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your question...

Phenibut is a derivative of a substance called "GABA" which is a neuro-transmitter (special chemical messenger in the brain). It is supposed to have anti-anxiety properties and a calming effect. Phenibut is sold as a supplement in the U.S. and as a psychiatric medication in some other countries.

Phenibut is basically converted to GABA in the brain and GABA accounts for the anti-anxiety and sedative effects. There are studies which show that Phenibut can cause reduction of stress and anxiety and improvement of impaired sleep. Other than some sedation, there are no major side effects reported with Phenibut.

Though Phenibut may temporarily cause a reduction of your anxiety symptoms in general, I feel that it may not be the only solution to your social anxiety. The reason is that social anxiety is a complex issue which needs to be addressed at a psychological level. So, if you want to take Phenibut, I would suggest using it in addition to some form of therapy like CBT.

It is also advised not to combine Phenibut with alcohol, sedatives, or other psychiatric medication (without consulting a doctor) as this may result in adverse effects.

Wish you all the best.
