Question: For the last 3 days my husband has had these episodes in the early evening where he is freezing to the point he almost looks like hes having convulsions. His head hurts really bad and well he's just in a lot of pain all over. He is so cold he goes and sits in the truck with the windows rolled up wrapped up in heavy blankets. it's extremely hot in there and that doesn't seem like it could be good for him. I don't want to do the wrong thing and make it worse. Could you please give me some advice? Thank you

Brief Answer:
the immune system kicks into high gear in the evening/night

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The freezing symptoms at night may be chills. Chills usually accompany a fever and they are actually the body's attempt to raise the temperature higher because trembling (movement) raises body temperature.

Covering up and sitting in a warm environment is the natural response but this would actually make this worse by further raising the temperature.

Fever and chills tend to get worse in the evening and night time because our immune system starts to kick into high gear at this time. This is the reason that symptoms start to worsen at this time.

The presence of the fever, chills, headache and aches and pain signify the presence of an infection, the most common infections are viral, though bacterial infections can also occur
At this stage with fever, chills, headache and pain, there are no localizing symptoms eg cough or stomach upset etc ,meaning nothing saying that the infection is affecting the respiratory tract (eg cold or flu) or gastrointestinal tract (vomiting or diarrhea)

He needs to resist the temptation to bundle up.

Add tylenol to the motrin to help with the fever and pain. Cool liquids and cool clothing to reduce temperature.

He should consider going to his doctor to be assessed however to try and determine the source of infection

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
