For The Last Week I’ve Had A Cold How Long Does It Usually Take To Recover From The Common Cold And Why Exactly Am I Getting Chest Pains From It Should I Visit A Doctor Or Will It Possibly Calm Down The Pain Is There Anything I Can Do To Calm It Down Would A Hot Water Bottle Help On The Chest?

Question: Hey doctor,
For the last week I’ve had a cold and it’s been getting better until last night, when I was breathing in late at night I started getting chest pain. Today I was with a friend who was smoking weed and I was breathing in the second hand smoke and I started getting more chest pain and I’ve still got a blocked nose and am producing mucus but I don’t really have a chesty cough it feels mostly dry cough but the chest pain has gotten worse since been exposed to the smoke. Do you think that may have made it worse and will it take longer to recover now? I don’t smoke or anything myself nor do I drink alcohol how long does it usually take to recover from the common cold and why exactly am I getting chest pains from it should I visit a doctor or will it possibly calm down the pain is there anything I can do to calm it down would a hot water bottle help on the chest?

Brief Answer:
That weed smoke might have caused acute bronchitis.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question .
The usual time for recovery in common cold is 7-10 days.
You might have developed acute bronchitis due to second-hand weed smoke.
This is inflammation of airways and this can cause chest pain, cough, mucus production etc.
So you should take a painkiller and anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
Apply warm water pad on affected areas chest.
Do steam inhalation and warm water gargles 5-6 times a day.
Don't worry, you will be alright, your pain will mostly subside with all these.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

How long will the pain last for do you think would it make the cold go for a lot longer? I had a shower with steam and that helped a little.
Brief Answer:
Pain will subside shortly.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question.
Don't worry, the pain will subside shortly.
Start painkiller and anti-inflammatory drug combination, warm water pad application. Pain will mostly subside in 2-3 days. And it won't worsen cold. So I don't think you will have prolonged cold.
