Question: For the past week I have had severe gas (some passing) pains in my intestines and my back. I no longer have a gallbladder? I also have bloating. There is not much I can eat without having uncomfortable gas. During the past month I have taken 2 prescriptions of Doxoclyne for a sinus infection. The last ending a week ago Tuesday. Today I have diarrhea, having gone 2 Times this morning after having yogurt. I have been diagnosed with IBS by a dr. I am not taking medication other than over the counter Charcoal Caps, IBgard as suggested by my Dr. for a while but which do not seem to help with either the gas or the pain. Do you have any suggestions to ease my problem. Is it common to have back pain with so much gas? I do not have nor ever had high blood pressure.

I can understand your concern...

Since you don't have the gallbladder anymore, just go easy on the fatty/deep fried foods (better to avoid them completely).

For diarrhea, first of all, drink plenty of water and ORS (oral rehydration solution) to remain well hydrated. ORS is available as sachets (WHO-ORS sachets). Empty a pack in a liter of mineral water, mix it well, have it alongside water over a few hours. Repeat the same afterward for a day at least.

Some simple diet to follow during this period will be banana, rice, applesauce, and toast, as in the BRAT diet. Some other bland foods that you may add include oatmeal, clear broths, and simple crackers.

As for the excessive gas formation, a few additional suggestions would be:

-Certain food products are notorious for causing gas and bloating. These include high fat dairy products, cheese, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lentils, kidney beans, and chickpeas primarily. Please avoid them.

-Have brown/multigrain bread instead of regular white bread.

-Try to have fish, fish products, chicken and avoid red meat.

-Have plenty of fresh green vegetables, simple homemade foods, salads, curd based diet, avoid any form of spicy food...

-Eat in small portions but at regular intervals (have 4-5 small meals a day rather than having 2-3 large meals)...never skip breakfast and always have some healthy foods in breakfast (eg. some baked slices of brown/multigrain bread, boiled eggs, oats, yogurt, muesli etc.)

-No smoking, alcohol strictly (if at all do)

-Have healthy snacks like almonds, pistachios, roasted flux/chia seeds, a bowl of salads every day.

-Drink Green tea rather than black tea. Avoid Coffee and caffeinated drinks (soda, energy drinks) as much as possible.

-Try to maintain a healthy sleeping habit (6-8hours of sound-sleep should be practiced)

-Try to meditate for 15-20min daily and physical exercises for about 30min (even jogging at the nearby park, indoor free-hand exercises will be helpful in the beginning)

-Try to have your dinner at least 2-2.5 hours before the bedtime

Well, since IBgard isn't helping at all, then better to switch over to conventional PPIs (eg. Omeprazole once/twice daily before breakfast/dinner) for next 6-8weeks and observe your progress. Along with this, regular probiotics supplements such as capsule VSL#3 should be tried too.

Please discuss this with your doctor and proceed further.
