Question: For years, on and off I have been getting a shooting pain in my head just over my right ear. It only last a second but is painful and I am worried that it could be something serious. I would love to get your input. Thank you.

I can understand your concern

As you explain the history i don't think this might be a serious situation. You have also done a head MRI which has been clear. This is a very important and good finding for excluding serious problems.

Usually this pain might be in common viral infections like a flu and tenderness of the nerve passing in that area cause that kind of pain.It comes and goes periodically or it might disappear for a long time or even forever. We don't order extra examinations for it.

Do not worry about it.If it happens more often painkillers such as Ibrufen twice orally for up to one week may help to improve the pain.
Or if it is accompanied with fever than an infection around the ear might be present and the ENT specialist should evaluate your situation. But please first discuss with your doctor for the above.

I hope to have been helpful
