Question: Good Evening

My partner has just told me he gets cold sores, please can you tell me if he could pass these onto me even if there is no sore present? Also can you get genital herpes from sexual contact with someone who gets cold sores on their mouth even if there is no sore present? Thank You

Brief Answer:
You can't get genital herpes from him.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

The cold sores can't be passed into you if there are no sores present. The cold sores are caused by herpes virus 1 and almost every one gets infected by it in early age and a drop of immunity can cause it to burst in sores.
You can't contract herpes genitalis if you have intercourse with someone with labial herpes. The herpes genitalis only developes in genital mucosa while herpes labialis only on oral mucosa.
So if you are kissing him and are having a low immunity moment you may get labial herpes and if you have intercourse with him you will not get herpes genitalis.

Hope I have answered the question.
