Good Day. I Recently Received The Results Of A Urinalysis

Question: Good day. I recently received the results of a urinalysis. I had trace amounts of ketones and bilirubin show up, which wasn't a XXXXXXX as I've been doing distance running and lifting heavy weights. I'm wondering, though, if there's a way to flush them out of my system for the next urinalysis? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
ketones occur if reduced carb intake

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Ketones are formed when the body does not use/breakdown carbohydrates for energy but use/breakdown fat instead
Ketones are found in those who reduce their carbohydrate intake eg or a low carb or reduced carb diet. It can also be found in uncontrolled diabetics (their bodies cannot use carbohydrates efficiently)
If a person is eating less then it can also occur.

Person who are using a low carb diet to lose weight, actually check their urine, if possible to make sure that ketones are present.

You can reduce the ketones by increasing carb intake. Ketones in the urine is just an indication that the body is using fats for energy instead of carbohydrates.

If the exercise has been accompanied by decreased carb intake or decreased eating in general, then this would cause the ketones.

If you are a diabetic, you need to assess your blood sugar control, your blood sugar may be too high.

In terms of bilirubin, this is not normally present in the urine. In most persons, it does not mean that there are any issues, most persons have no problems but in some persons, it means that liver function tests should be done to check the liver.

Urobilinogen is a form or type of bilirubin which can be present in the urine.
Bilirubin is a little different from this, not expected in the urine. It is not typically related to diet or activity.

As said, it is not serious in many persons but if there is no recent history of liver function tests, then these should be done.

There is no particular flushing agent for bilirubin, just normally a liver check

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questktions

Thank you very much, Dr. XXXXXXX I've read a relatively recent study correlating bilirubin levels and significant exercise, but that's the only place I've found it. I very much appreciate the answer; I was hoping to "pass" the next UA, and it looks like a little rest, more carbs, and hydration will do the trick.
Best regards,
Jake
