Question: Good morning, I am 43 years old and healthy. I had my regular annual OBGYN appt a couple weeks ago and everything was normal. I had a mammo and ultrasound a week later. I am fairly dense and always have an ultrasound with my mammo. Although they did not find any lumps or changes at all they said I had a slightly enlarged lymph node on each side and would like to do an ultrasound-guided biopsy to see if it's just inflammation or something else?.I do not have any other symptoms of anything and no lumps or masses were found. How concerned should I be about this? Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Probably a reactive lymph node, you should not be concerned.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern.

Enlarged lymph nodes are usually related to reactive lymph nodes.

A reactive lymph node is an enlarged lymph node, which is commonly the result of an infection.

The reactive lymph nodes are usually benign and are not a matter of concern.

I agree with your doctor that the only way to confirm the nature of the lymph nodes is through ultrasound-guided biopsy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
