Had A Fall, Numbness In Leg, Walking And Sitting Using Brace. Will I Be Able To Lead A Normal Life?
I had a fall from 6 ft and because of being a osteoporosis
I had a c2 and t4 injury
Got numbness in right leg which now is only 2% left on the toes only
I can move all my limbs
Plus my bladder and bowels movement is getting better
Earlier I was taking laxotive medicine and use to pass bowels every second day
Now without the medicine I started passing the motion in last 3 days daily
I walk n sit with the help of a brace for 10 mind each three times a day
I also broke my left collar bone with ribs on both sides
Just want to know if I will be able to lead a normal life
I'm 41 years old with thalassemia intermedia
Will I be able to have sex with my partner ?
I feel the fractures are getting healed and there is no pain on spine
Almost 5 weeks back I had a fall from about 6 ft
Being thalassemia intermedia and oestoportic
I got injury on c2 ( ctc shows a cover chipped off )and d4 injury
Instantly I felt numbness in my right leg and now it's about 5-10% left as its only on the toes.
On the day of injury I could not raise my right leg but now it's fine as I do exercise and can lift the sand and feel sensation on all limbs.
I was admitted for a surgery which was called off as I could raise my leg and also because my ribs were fractured and it was deemed XXXXXXX .
Now I'm on conservative treatment
And am responding to excercises.f
I also got a left collar fracture in 1/3 rd portion plus few ribs fractured
Which after 5+ weeks seems to feel as if they have healed and I could turn side ways
I were a brace only to walk and sit for 10 odd mins three times a day
My question now is will I be as normal as I was before the fall
Will I be able to lead a normal/ sexual active life also will I be able to work ( I gave my own import business)
Is there any unforeseen problems in conservative treatment ?
Is there a Need for a surgery in future.
My numbness is almost over except after laying straight for hours ,I do feel heavy around the inner knee area
Please advice
Thanks for posing your query.
I should say you are very fortunate. Having two level spine injuries, you seem to have good strength in your extremities. In spine injury, if there is a complete paraplegia then prognosis is much worse, however if you are showing good recovery then I think you have very good prognosis. You will be able to live a normal life.
I would like to know about urinary function. Do you have control over it? Your sexual function should return. Only thing is, it is difficult to comment about time frame. Please let me know about how the strength in extremities is and how are the bowel bladder functions.
Regarding future treatment about the fracture, I need to see the x-ray/MRI imaging. Usually the fractures heal however, during the course of treatment we need to find out if there is any spinal instability by doing flexion/extension x-rays.
I am quite hopeful that you will regain all the strength. Please let me know if you have any more queries. Thanks.
Thanks for your reply .
The power in all upper and lower limbs now are 5/5 as per my PT.
At the time of admission it was 1/5 in right leg and about 3/5 in other limbs.
I had numbness in my right leg and over my stomach which now is only 2%_ 5 % left on the toes and fingers of my both legs
Getting pyhiso every day . It's now almost 6 weeks of injury happened on 21 July
The PT is doing isometric exercises only and as per him the range are perfect .
I'm only waiting for 20th of September when I will go for a review
Dr. XXXXXXX is looking after me.
The bladder and bowel movement are all under control .
Initially, I was on cathera for 14 days
And for bowels I was taking creamfin medicine after which I was passing motion alternate days , which I stopped 5 days back
And since then a have a regular motion .
For neck and t4 exercise will only start after the review
I walk with a brace for 10-15 mins thrice a day and sit for same time as well.
I just hope I can go back to same me which I was prior to the injury
How long do you think I will take time to be normal as of 20 July ?
You are on a right path towards recovery. Continue PT. I hope you will recover within next 4-6 wks. But still we need to see about spinal stability on imaging. You should be able to live a normal life once you recovered. I Hope I answered all your queries.
If you have any specific queries let me know.
