Question: Had a smear today to see if I had a yeast infection, haven’t got results back but after the smear I peed and it burns really bad and also seen some blood. I had a total hysterectomy last year.

Brief Answer:
It may be due to genitourinary infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to Ask a doctor forum. Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, these symptoms can be due to associated genitourinary infection. If you were having any signs of yeast infection in genital tract it may spread to urinary tract as well as candida is one of the common causes of urinary tract infections in females.

Along with smear, it will be better if you can have high vaginal swab cultures and sensitivity tests as well. Urinalysis for any signs of pus cells or red cell should be done as well as to look for other signs of infection like leukocyte esterase or bacteria if any. If so urine cultures may also be needed.

Meanwhile OTC analgesics like acetaminophen as well as cranberry XXXXXXX may be used for symptomatic relief. Ensure good hydration and local hygiene as well. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Regards

I wasn’t having any burning or blood when wiping before I had the smear, I was feeling pretty good except for a discharge and odor and that’s why I went for the smear. Just peed and still burning very bad and still a trace of blood on the toilet paper. What could I do for it and still don’t understand what might be going on

Brief Answer:
The already existing infection might have been complicated

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Thanks for the feedback and discussing your concerns. The procedure might have complicated the pre existing infection as odor and discharge was present so any progression of infection or inflammatory changes in local muscosa may cause bleeding through blood vessels in mucosal surface of vagina. However bleeding can be from any trauma caused during biopsy. If not in large amount and only spotting on wiping is present, it will spontaneously resolve but if it doesn't resolve may need gynecologist review for local examination, and if local cause or source of bleeding isn't established then the investigations we discussed earlier may be needed. Regards
