Have Raised Liver Function Test. Recent US Showed That The Portal Vein And Liver Is Mild Dissented. Suggest?

Question: I have raised LFT and have recently had an ultra sound with findings that the portal vein is mild dissention of 14 mm and liver 17 cm - No signs of lesion seen. How significant are the figures (14mm and 17cm)? Can portal vein dissention be reduced by things like abstaining from alcohol and/or do the above figures suggest a serious problem? Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Alcohol withdrawal may be useful.

Detailed Answer:
Dear,
Mild rise of liver enzymes and enlargement of liver is possible with alcoholic hepatitis with fatty infiltration of the liver associated with mild enlargement of liver and distention of the portal vein, as is in your case.
To know the full status you need to have exact values of liver function tests and full ultrasonography report and your complaint if any.
If you withdraw alcohol, the distention of portal vein might not reduce immediately but further fatty infiltration of liver, further enlargement of liver and further dilatation of the portal vein will stop. The dimensions of 14mm and 17cm are not highly significant and they do not suggest any serious problem but are a warning signal.
Hope I have addressed your concern.
Truly,
Dr. J. Ticku
