Dry cough usually persist for long time...
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,
Dry cough is an annoying complaint. However usually this symptoms persists for 3-6 weeks before they slowly start to disappear. I would be concerned if you have other associated symptoms such as breathing difficulty, chest pain, fever and producing sputum with the cough.
In the absence of associated complaint, this dry cough could be the residual symptom of recent viral infection or due to allergy.
Benadryl is an useful drug in this situation. If you get this cough in bouts, you can try inhalers; they relieve bronchoconstriction associated with cough bouts which in turn can help you.
Keep yourself healthy with a good diet and plenty of hydration. If things don't resolve in the next 3 weeks or if you develop aforementioned symptoms, visit your nearest doctor for evaluation.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarification.
Regards
