Having Severe Periodic Cramps. Pelvic And Transvaginal Ultrasound Done. What Does Shading On The Sides Of Cervix Mean?
Question: I just had an pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound done, as I thought I may have ovarian cysts. I have extreme cramping when my cycle is on the left ovary, and a couple of months ago, it woke me out of a dead sleep and felt like my ovary was being squeezed.
During my ultrasound, there was a student doing the ultrasound, with the ultrasound technician over seeing the ultra sound. They kept taking pictures, from what I heard, of the endometrium, and mentioned I had shading along the sides of the cervix.
They also had a very hard time finding my left ovary, they couldn't find it transvaginally, and had to go back to the pelvic ultrasound to find it. But when they were searching for my left ovary, it was extremely painful, where my left ovary would be.
I'm nervous of what the results will be. They seemed to be taking alot of pictures, and it felt like they were focusing alot of the pictures on the cervix and uterus.
What does shading on the sides of cervix usually mean? And why would they be taking alot of pictures of the endometrium? and what is the endometrium? Do I need to be worried

-When endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus that condition is called endometriosis.
-The most common site of endometriosis is ovary. And other sites are fallopian tubes, pouch of XXXXXXX intestines etc.
It can also spread to cervix and vagina.
-Endometriosis presents with symptoms like pain during periods, chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, dysuria etc.
So by taking consideration of all these factors and according to your description:
- There is a possibility of endometriosis in your case.
-As ovary is the most common site they might have searched for it. But sometimes bowels can mask the ovary or sometimes due to adhesions ovary may get attached to the back side of the uterus etc and may not visualize in scan.
-As endometriosis can spread to the cervix may be they visualized that tissue which might have appeared as shading.
-As they introduced vaginal probe during scanning that might have moved organs affected by endometriosis leading to pain.
This is my interpretation according to your description. When you get the scan reports you may have a better idea regarding the problem.
When recognized early and treated properly endometriosis is a curable condition.
