Herpes can be detected by mainly blood test and culture.

The window period for the blood detection is 4 to 6 weeks.The blood tests is usually looking for antibodies which are formed when the body reacts to the presence of the virus.

In terms of the culture which was the test done, this is looks for the virus itself and should give an earlier idea.
The culture would have given a better idea if it was taken directly from the lesions itself.
Sometimes cultures for HSV are negative if a sample is not taken directly from the sores or small blisters.
