Having Stomach Discomfort, Blood In Stool, Nauseous And Bacterial Infection. What Treatment To Be Done?

Question: Since April, I have been having the following symptoms:
* Mild stomach discomfort.
* Producing yellow/brown mucus with a bacteria/infection
smell to it
*A slight warm/burning sensation in my stomach every now and then.
* Small amounts of dark blood in my stools and light blood on the paper (not every time I go to toilet)
* Occasionally having gas that makes me feel nauseous until I let it out.
* Occasionally having nausea when going to toilet.
I haven't been having these symptoms all together but I have a few of them at a time and they a few weeks later, I will get different symptoms. The main one that I have always had is producing yellow or brown mucus which has a bacteria/infection smell to it. When I go to toilet, I produce small stools that sink quickly and it just feels like my body can't produce a proper stool. I go to toilet about 2/3 times a day and I usually go to toilet within the first hour of waking up which I never used to do until I started feeling like this. Along with this, the symptoms I am having now is a slight burning sensation at the top of my stomach, it only lasts for a few seconds and happens about once or twice a day. I also have a discomfort just under my left rib which comes a few times a day and usually lasts around 30-45mins and I sometimes get a discomfort down the left side of my stomach. Another discomfort which I have is in my small intestines and it feels like I drank water too fast. It seems to be worse at night and I have never had the discomfort in my intestines and under my rib at the same time.
Apart from what is mentioned above, I feel fine in myself and have full control over my bowels. I have changed my diet to include my fibre and drink water and cut out certain types of food but that hasn't worked. I went to the doctors in early May and they said I have IBS but it feels make like an infection or an ulcer to me but I am not a doctor and I can't get an appointment until the end of this month. I am really scared that it could be something serious and that I could have done long term damage to myself because I have left it for so long.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
I dont think you need to be worrying about causing long term damage to yourself. Your symptoms sound like you have had a long standing infection or probably just IBS. the only way to find out is do a test which will rule out the infection. What I would suggest is that a stool culture and sensitivity be done. this should help us rule out an infection. If an infection is picked up, we need to give you a course of antibiotics and you should be good.
If it not , IBS would need psychotherapy and management of diet and other issues. You could try excluding gluten from your diet and see if it helps. It does produce a lot of relief in some patients with IBS.
Hope that helps
