Question: Hello - I have hypothyroidism - at end of march they upped my thyroid pill 112mcg, but i also started on spironolactone 25mg for female pattern hair loss. i have noticed excess thinning and just wanted to see if spironolactone can cause this or it is likely just the upped synthroid? If spironolactone can cause this i wanted to stop it, but in all of my reading it seems sprio can HELP this condition. please help? i have appointments with DR later in May, but wanted to ask in advance - thanks!

Hello amd thank you for asking!
To combat female hair loss pattern, spironolactone should be combined with minoxidil. Spironolactone stops hair shedding by inhibiting the effect of androgen, minoxidil works to widen the hair fibers and stimulate growth.
Meanwhile there are studies confirming that spironolactone can increase TSH, thus increasing the need for levothyroxine.
You should check TSH level to be sure that the actual dose of levothyroxine is correct and discuss with your physician to combine spironolactone with minoxidil.
Hope the information will help.

Ok so my current shedding may likely be caused to my TSH - which i have a blood test on order for next week. I was just curious because i started both (new synthroid dose) + sprio at the same time, and i was worried. I just wanted to STOP the sprio IF it can cause hair loss AS WELL....so XXXXXXX in women is not know to CAUSE hair loss, right?

I feel like my TSH may have gone a bit too low this time..... i will find out next week.

Many thanks for your help!!!

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Yes , spironolactone in females results efficient in treating hair loss. I wouldn't recommend to stop it.
The efficiency is seen within one year , especially if combined with minoxidil.
A high TSH may contribute in hair weakness.
