Question: Hello-

I have a swollen throat, which hurts when I swallow. This is not a common occurrence, and is not allergy related. The initial onset was accompanied by a fever of 103.5 degrees, which has since broken. My temp is now 99.5

Can I use Claritin-D to alleviate or lessen the discomfort?

Detailed Answer:
Hii. I cannot make out what you mean by swollen throat. So please consult an Ent surgeon and get yourself thoroughly checked. Make sure you don't have any infection in the tonsils and back of the throat. Get your voice box also checked by endoscopy. And make sure you don't have any swelling in the neck. You may need to send a throat swab in the microbiology laboratory for culture and you need to start an antibiotic according the report. Start betadine gargle. Review if you have any queries.

To clarify, I mean a sore throat. My glands are swollen on one side, which is creating discomfort when swallowing. I am just looking to see if Claratin-D could help reduce the discomfort from the sore throat assuming its cause is a common cold or the flu.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Don't take antibiotics randomly. Get a throat swab and sent for culture in microbiology laboratory and according to the report start an antibiotic. And if there is no bacteria and it is due to viral flu then no need to start antibiotic. You can take betadine gargle and levocetrizine tablet.
