Question: Hello Doc, My Daughter XXXXXXX is 18.5 months old.

We wanted to check her understanding and speech patterns

On Understanding
-----------------------

1. She Can understand everything like come here, go there , pick up , show tongue, show dog , show cat, show door , More or less understanding 90% of what we speak in Bengali and English

2. On speaking - She can speak 10-12 words in mixed Bengali English . (We are from Kolkata). Out of 10 words she speaks , she can join 1-2 words: like No Cat, No Daddy etc, No Mummy, No Dada etc. , more sleep etc.

3. She is more interested in explaining things using sign language which we want her to avoid , we want her to Signal less and speak more

Kindly advice on progress and let us know what we do to develop her speech.

She is 1.5 years old now. Kindly note the age.

1. Did she cry immediately after birth?
yes
2. How is her attaining of motor developmental milestones?
She walks and runs almost from 1year old, very sharp hearing skills, very good in understanding what we are telling her and all requests and commands. She only speaks 7-10 words now but is just 18 months old. She also joins 1-2 words and makes some sense.

3. Is there any history of seizure disorder?
No
4. Is there any family history of language delay or autism?
No

Brief Answer:
Just normal interaction in one single language will be enough

Detailed Answer:
Hello... I understand your concern.
I do not think she is having any delayed language development.
By what you say I feel her development in all the domains is age appropriate.
There is no need for you to to do anything extra, but one simple suggestion is that you need to talk to her in only one single language whatever it is, so that she develops the language skills completely in that language and then gradually you can introduce other languages.
I don't think there is anything for you to worry about here.
If possible curtail the use of of cell phone viewing or Tablet viewing and TV viewing to not more than 30 minutes per day.
I wish your kid a bright future ahead. If you need any future medical consultation and suggestions, I will be glad to help. You can approach me at the following link.

Thanks Doc for your kind note.
She says Mamma, Baba, Dada, Nei (No in Bengali), Bye, Meow (Cat), Bha Bha (Dog), Dao (Give in Bengali ), Jah (Go), TiTi (Lizard) etc

She understands more or else everything we speak in daily life.
