Question: Hello Doctor,

I am asking this question on behalf of my wife. My wife is 27 years old. She was diagnosed with Enterococcus Faecalis and Escherichia Coli through vaginal swab test. She was prescribed with Ampicillin 1000 mg x 10 days and Fluomycin (vaginal suppositories). After a month, vaginal swab re-test says she is clear of E.Faecalis but the concentration of Escherichia Coli has increased.

The Urologist has prescribed Antibiotic shots for a week and also suggests a vaccination (after antibiotic shot course). He said that the oral antibiotics and vaginal suppositories are not good for the stomach and vagina respectively. I also have Enterococcus Faecalis in my semen culture and now I am currently being treated with Antibiotic shots. We are planning for a kid.

Questions:
1. Does vaccination affect anyways fertility for my wife?
2. How long does my wife needs to take antibiotic shots to get cleared of E.Coli?
3. Under worst situations, if my E.Faecalis doesn't clear what are the options for pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
Taking antibiotics does not affect Fertility

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.

Both of you seemed to have the infection and being treated with appropriate antibiotics as per the culture report.

I would answer your questions point to point:

1) Both of you need to continue taking antibiotics till final culture report of vaginal swab and Semen is negative for bacterial growth

2) Taking antibiotics does for long duration does not affect fertility

3) There are every possibility of normal conceptions after both of you cleared of the infection

Hope I have answered your queries.
Please do write if you have more questions.

Thanks and Regards
Dr. Patil
