Hello Doctor, I Was Eating Tobacco In The Form Of
Question: Hello Doctor, I was eating tobacco in the form of Gutkha before December 2017. After that I quit the habit. Then I started the habit again in July 2019 till now. So I was having 1.5 years of gap and then for around 6 months of habit. Yesterday I went to the Dentist he told me that there are no serious conditions like white patches or OSMF or anything to worry. So my question is if I quit the habit of chewing Gutkha again from now, are there any chances of getting oral or throat cancer in future? If yes what are the percentage? Is dipping tobacco is less dangerous than the Gutkha? Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
Chances would still be there
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
I understand your concerns. It's good that you are considering quitting chewing tobacco. Quitting reduces chances of future cancer, whenever it may be. But earlier the better.
If you quit now, you will reduce your future risks to a great extent but it won't be zero. Even never tobacco users can have oral cancer. Difficult to say any percentage however. It depends on total years of exposure too.
But definitely it will be much less than what it would be, if you would have continued.
All forms of chewable tobacco are equally dangerous.
Hope this helps.
