Question: Hello Doctor,

My Elder brother was diagnosed Chronic Kidney Disease and he has been undergoing Haemo Dialysis since Oct-2018.

My brother is having terrific lower back pain for the past 25 Days. Doctor has suggested to take voriconazole 200 MG tablet for reducing the fungal infection which could be the cause of the Severe Lower back pain.

My brothers Lower back pain has reduced. However my brothers Blood test is having high value of SGOT & SGBT. Requesting you to please refer the attachment.

Would it cause an issues for the Lever functionality or do we need to take any supplement to maintain SGOT and SGPT under control.

Thanks and Regards

Brief Answer:
It doesnt seem to be liver

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query, seen the attachment and here is my advice.

The raised liver enzymes seem to be due to side effects of medicines like voriconazole. Another possible cause could be Hepatitis C Virus infection and can be checked with a blood test. Yes there seems to be mildly deranged liver function and will recover when the medicine is stopped. I would not suggest another medicine until cause is found as almost all medicines can affect liver. Since your brother has liver issues and is on dialysis, doses also need to be lowered accordingly. Check with your doctor about it.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
