Question: Hello Doctor,
My son is 3 years old.
My son had picked up cold followed by fever and wheezing on 5thNovember 2019.Later again he picked up cold followed by wheeze on 28th November . After curing it this time as well, he kept picking up cold every 15 days but no symptoms of wheeze.

On feb 20th, which is after 2 1/2 months later , he had an hair cut followed by a head bath. He picked up cold and wheeze the same night. Now our doctor has prescribed Montair 4 mg once every evening for 3 months and “budecart 100” inhaler for3 months.

Since the he had been fine with no trace of cold and wheeze.

Our doctor had told this to be jus because of the pollution and climatic changes and he is allergic to something.

My doubt is , will he become dependent on this medicine for more time ? Or after stopping these medicines would he fall ill frequently?

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for asking on this platform

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern. Frequent wheezing episodes in children below 5 years of age should be treated with Mast stabilizer like montair and low dose inhalational corticosteroids like budecort as advised for your child.
Labelling the diagnosis of asthma at this age is difficult because children of this age are not able to undergo pulmonary function test.
If symptoms are well controlled with 3 months of treatment and there is no new episode, inhalation steroid can be discontinued with further treatment with montair only.
You need not to worry as this low dose corticosteroid treatment has no significant short or long term side effects.
Most of the babies respond well with 3 months of low dose ICS.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more doubts.
Regards
