Hello Doctor, My Uncle Is A 55-year-old, Has A Low

Question: Hello Doctor,
My uncle is a 55-year-old, has a low back pain since 2years and numbness in his left 2 toes, his profession is a tile setter means flooring, fixing marbles on the floor. 2 years back he lifted a heavy machinery and experienced some pain at the low back area. The doctor suggested him not to go for a work and avoid lifting heavy objects.

We did a MRI of the spine which showed L1, L2, L3 disc bulge and L4-L5 disc herniation,

when consulted to a neurosurgeon he suggested a surgery and when asked the complication of the surgery, he mentioned the possible complication can be a loss of bladder control for 20% of cases.

So, we are fearing to go for a spine surgery because most of the times it has neurological complications. But it cannot be ignored because now there is a numbness in 2 toes which may progress if left untreated. The disc bulge in other discs may herniate in due course of time.

Some of my friends said, there is a better ayurvedic massage treatment of the spine for a few months which can treat spinal disorders.

So, I request you to help me out with some conservative treatment options and surgical options for disc herniation with radiculopathy.

Brief Answer:
Surgery may be required.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

I have seen the MRI films you have attached. L4-L5 disc herniation appears to have compression on bilateral exiting nerve roots. L3-L4 disc bulge appears to be causing bilateral foraminal narrowing. As, already sensory symptoms in foot are present in the form of numbness and pain is not improving, surgery may be considered.

Hope that helps. If you have any further questions, I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Regards,

Dr.Ajay Panwar,

Dr. Is there any conservative treatment for herniation, can it be reversible. Disc bulge to normal. What are the complications of surgery?

Brief Answer:
No.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Conservative treatment can't cure herniation. It is not reversible with medicines. Complications may include nerve injuries causing bladder dysfunction or sensory loss. Post-operative infection may occur as well. A neurosurgeon may give you expert opinion regarding the same.

Hope that helps. If you have any further questions, I shall be glad to have you in follow-up else please write a review.
