Question: Hello Doctor

My wife has been complaining about falling hairs. She met with two different dermatologists who did blood tests that showed everything normal. Then she has been prescribed some vitamins and shampoo. But that did not help. Her hairs are still falling.

What would be the best advice?

Brief Answer:
Regarding hair loss

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

The two most common causes of hair loss or alopecia in females are Telogen effluvium and Androgenetic alopecia. In a female, Telogen effluvium may occur after pregnancy or 1-3 months of delivery of baby, after a medical illness or surgery as well as with nutritional deficiency/ significant weight loss. Thyroid dysfunction and deficient iron stores are also important causes of Telogen Effluvium in females. Telogen effluvium is also more common in patients with vitamin D and B 12 deficiency. I would like to know what all tests were done? did it include Thyroid screening, Ferritin levels, Vitamin D and B12 levels? Management is based identification of the exact cause. What all medications is she using?
On the other hand, Androgenetic Alopecia is characterized by thinning and decreased volume of hair. It mainly affects the central scalp/ top of the scalp. Minoxidil and finasteride are standard treatments for androgenetic alopecia in females.

Hope to assist you further with your concern.

Thank you

Based on your explanation, I think the main cause is Telogen effluvium though my wife has not become pregnant since we got married. There is no thinning or decrease in volume of the hair and that is why I guessed the reason.

I am traveling at the moment and unfortunately all medical papers are at home. I will be able to share the tests after I have gone back home in two weeks.
