Hello Doctor My Wife Has Been Complaining About Irregular Period.

Question: Hello Doctor

My wife has been complaining about irregular period. We have been living together since January 2019 and she has not conceived yet.
Initially, her period was regular (5 days duration with 28-day cycle). Three months after our marriage, there have been interruptions with the period and its duration. Sometimes it arrives after days while some times it arrives after 6 weeks. The duration has also been up normal. Sometimes it used to stay 7 days while sometimes it could go up to 10 days.
Besides the irregularity of the period, there are no pains or discomfort and everything has been tested normal.
She started taking pills to normalize the period which somehow helped.
Two months ago she met with a gynecologist who advised her to take progesterone capsule (200mg) for 10 days from day 16 to day 25 of the period with sex on alternate days. Furthermore, she prescribed for her consevel to take one pill a day for 3 months. We were expecting the progesterone capsule to normalize the period. However, the period arrives one day after stopping taking the pill, i.e. day 26 which is confusing us and possibly compromising the chance for pregnancy. She is still taking the consevel on daily basis while she finished the progesterone for two months despite the irregularity of the blood.

Any advice to regularize the blood?
What could maximum the chance for pregnancy?
Any advisable sex styles?

Brief Answer:
Irregular periods can be due to hormonal disturbance.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concerns.

The mild delay in periods can be due to mild hormonal disturbance. The progesterone capsule when stopped causes the bleeding. It is used to regularize the cycles. Consevel pill alone is not sufficient to help her conceive.

You need to consult an infertility specialist and get proper medicines prescribed for her that can help her conceive. As she has taken progesterone for 2 months, she can stop it for one or two months and see if the periods have become regular or not.

For maximum chances of pregnancy, you need to have daily intercourse during the fertile days of the cycle- Day 12 to 18. As long as there are complete penetration and ejaculation inside, there is no need to worry about the sex position. Your husband also needs to be examined for any abnormalities.

Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow-up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you for you feedback

Is it advisable to stop taking the consevel if it does not help alone?

On the daily intercourse during the fertile period (day 12 - day 18), how many rounds are normally recommended noting that we do 3 to 4 rounds per day during rest of the time?

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Consevel will help better if taken with other ovulation inducing medicines. It can also help in regularising her periods. Do not stop it without consulting her gynecologist. During the fertile period, once daily intercourse is sufficient.
Hope my answer is helpful.
Do accept my answer in case there are no further queries.
