Hello Doctor, This Is Regarding The Vitamin D Deficiency. As

Question: Hello Doctor,

This is regarding the Vitamin D deficiency. As part of annual check up last year, I was found to be Vitamin D Deficient. Due to that, the doctor prescribed me Vitamin D Supplements Tablet (50,000 IU per week) for 3 Months. She prescribed me the supplement in August last year. However, due to some stress in the professional life I used to miss to take the supplement most of the time and was taking the tablet around once in 3 weeks which resulted in finishing the prescription in 9 months by end of April 2019. I am little worried if this practice of taking the supplement intermittently could have caused any side-effect.
I recently started getting knee pain (From last 1 month). Doctor mentioned that it is because of some nerve pinch from hips till left leg and Phycial therapy and Non-Steroid medicines will cure this. Also, I am getting muscular pain in the body little frequent than previously, so I was thinking if I can again start taking Vitamin D supplement (At least over the counter supplements which can be taken 1 tablet per day) or can intake of additional Vitamin D supplement have any side-effect? Just wanted to inform that I have high cholesterol.
Request for your advice.

Thanks
doctor

Hello, I'm Dr. Branch,
Thanks for using 'Ask A Doctor' service.

As for your Vitamin D deficiency, missing doses and taking the supplement over a longer period of time will not have any side effects, and may still be effective in replenishing your Vitamin D. At this point, it would be reasonable to continue Vitamin D supplementation with 800 IU Vitamin D daily.

This should not have any side effects at all. I would also suggest checking your Vitamin D levels now to see if you are still deficient.

As for your knee pain, I would follow your doctor's recommendation and see if it resolves with that treatment. Again, using Vitamin D supplements should not interfere or affect this.

As for your high cholesterol, if you have a high enough risk for heart disease, it might be appropriate to start you on a medication to lower your cholesterol. But again, Vitamin D supplementation will not affect this at all.

I hope that helps...

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
