Hello, I Am A 20 Year Old Male. 2 Years

Question: Hello,

I am a 20 year old male. 2 years ago I had my aortic valve replaced with a mechanical valve because it was leaking. I am taking coumadin to thin my blood because of the valve. I am otherwise completely healthy, no other medication and no medical issues. I am in good shape- 5'9, 160lbs.

I am thinking of consuming marijuana. I would take an edible THC oil. Does this pose a significant risk to my blood or cardiovascular system? Is it any more concerning that consuming a few drinks of alcohol?

Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
I would strongly recommend avoiding these drugs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I understand your concern and would explain that both Marijuana and Alcohol can interact with coumadin and cause changes in your blood coagulation pattern.

This may lead to an increased risk for bleeding, while taking Marijuana (which increases the effects of coumadin) or an increased risk for blood clotting while mixing with alcohol.

From the other hand, alcohol and marijuana can increase the risk for cardiac arrhythmia. They may also cause chronic changes in the cardio-vascular system, when used for a long time, and increase the risk for stroke or heart attack.

So, to conclude, I would strongly recommend avoiding both marijuana and alcohol in your clinical condition, although you feel healthy and in a good shape.

These drugs may cause serious complications in your body, especially when taken in high doses or for a prolonged period of time.
